Sharing meals, a drink, a word or two or simply sharing a moment as we gazed out over the extraordinary landscape of Scotland are times I will always remember and cherish.
When I reflect on all of the conversations we had getting to know each other or renewing our acquaintance, I know that it is not where we go and what we see or do but it is the people who make the trip.

First of all, the people on the tour, including our hosts John and Theresa Bishop were very friendly and welcoming. Many on the tour were well seasoned travellers. We enjoyed conversing and getting to know everyone.
The scenery of Scotland, especially the highlands and northern Islands such as the Orkney Islands were beautiful and we wish we had more time to spend there.
We have lovely memories of meeting our ‘coach’ folks and sharing the beautiful views of Scotland with you.

I’m very happy to have gone on this adventure “Country Roads Scotland: Highlands and Islands” with guest host John Bishop. It really was a pleasure. And I can’t thank you enough for keeping all of our ducks in a row as various arrangements—from flights to insurance—were put in place. You truly made all the difference in making travel easy in these strange times.
Really enjoyed our ‘ride’ through Scotland. (As a driver at home for myself and some non-driving friends, it was wonderful to be able to simply stare out the window at landscape—no roadside attractions, no giant billboards.)
Melissa did a great job, dealing with all the unexpected changes whether from QEII closures or serious traffic accident shutting out planned route. She was always good-natured, fun but low-key, provided just the right amount of information at the right time. It must have been so stressful, but she never showed that. Enjoyed the one time music was included as we drove onto Skye. A lovely touch!
Local guides, when used, were excellent too.
We had a congenial group of interesting people, all very good about mixing up where we sat at meals, etc.
Scottish people everywhere were always helpful and friendly—a real pleasure to travel in Scotland!

Bruno Feldeisen is a Chef & cookbook author and is currently a judge on The Great Canadian Baking Show being aired on Netflix & CBC.

While working as an apprentice for a renowned chocolate shop, Feldeisen fell in love with the lively, intense, and family-like environment and trained under the leadership of Michelin Star Chef Alain Ducasse. After moving to the U.S., Feldeisen worked at Los Angeles famed Patina Restaurant, the Four Seasons Hotel in New York, which garnered a three-star rating from the New York Times. He has owned a French American restaurant in San Francisco that earned two-and-a-half-stars, taught at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, BC and was Executive Pastry Chef at the Four Seasons Vancouver and recently Executive Chef at Semiahmoo Resort in Northern Chef Bruno has appeared on popular Food Network shows such as Chopped Canada, Donut Showdown, Sweet Genius and Beat Bobby Flay. Chef Bruno was nominated twice for The James Beard Award.

Outside the kitchen, Feldeisen is dedicated to giving back to the community including Vancouver Opera, Ronald Mac Donald’s House, BC Cancer Society, Kidsafe, Dr. Peter Aids Foundation among dozens. Bruno is also an advocate for mental health awareness as an advisor and supporter to Anxiety Canada.

On his time off, Chef Bruno loves spending time with his son Sergio, skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking around the many trails of British Columbia in summer.

Chef Bruno released his first cookbook “Baking with Bruno” in 2020 and is also currently finishing his second cookbook “The Bacon, Bourbon, Chocolate and Butter Cookbook” to be available in Spring 2023.

A Day in Berlin – What you MUST See: Join Alemanizando on a Special Tour Through the German Capital

What can you do if you have just one day in Berlin? Well, Elissa and Rodrigo from @Alemanizando have some tips for you! They take you to some famous places and to a few hidden spots in the German capital — like its smallest street. The Berlin-based couple from Brazil start at the Brandenburg Gate and then go for breakfast in one of Berlin’s major attractions: the Reichstag building. And of course they also visit its glass dome. Their next stops are the Unter den Linden boulevard, Humboldt University, Bebelplatz and Museum Island. Another hot tip is the Nikolaiviertel, Berlin’s oldest residential quarter. From there it’s just a short walk to Alexanderplatz, where most people would go up to the top of Germany’s tallest building, the TV Tower, to get a good view over the city. But Elissa and Rodrigo have a cheaper workaround for you to get a great alternative view from above! Not far away on Karl-Marx-Allee — the “first socialist street” on German soil — they feel a bit like they’re in Russia. No wonder, if you see the architecture that dates back to the East Germany era. Then it’s time for dinner in the popular Friedrichshain district before they end their tour at the East Side Gallery, which is both the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall and also the longest open-air gallery in the world.

When the sun goes in the Spanish town of Algar, people gather on chairs outside their doorsteps to catch up with friends and relatives. In the past, people would enjoy these 'alfresco chats' after a long day of working in the fields to cool off on hot evenings since they didn't have air-conditioning. These gatherings became a tradition, and many townspeople would use the same chairs for years, some of which are now more than 50 years old.

With international travel opening up again, travellers may find more security visiting countries with a strong track record of adjusting their policies appropriately and swiftly.

An ongoing pandemic, global conflict and general uncertainty have put a spotlight on every country's need to be more agile and adaptable in recent years. By being able to implement flexible policies and solutions based on new information, governments can more effectively serve citizens and travellers in a rapidly changing world.

To capture this ability to adapt and respond to obstacles, US News & World Report introduced the new Agility index this year as part of their annual best countries rankings, creating a list of the top nations ranked by their ability to be adaptable, dynamic, modern, progressive or responsive.

These factors are more important than ever to travellers, many who are starting to travel internationally again for the first time in two years. As seen by the stream of new Covid-19 variants, conditions on the ground can shift rapidly and travellers may find more security visiting those countries with a strong track record of adjusting their policies appropriately and swiftly.

We spoke to residents and policy experts in some of the most highly ranked countries to find out what makes for an agile country and what travellers should expect when touching down.

It was a cold, drizzly January day in Istanbul and I was searching for inspiration at Goreme, an old-school dessert shop in the Kurtuluş neighbourhood. Renowned for its oven-baked pudding and consistently excellent dairy-based desserts, they also offer what is thought to be the oldest sweet treat known to mankind: ashure.

The major ancient historic sites in Sri Lanka, all UNESCO World Heritage sites: Sacred City of Anuradhapura and Mihintale, Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Golden Temple of Dambulla, Ancient City of Sigiriya, Sacred City of Kandy. Anuradhapura was capital of Sri Lanka from the 4th century BCE until the end of the 10th century CE. Anuradhapura and the nearby Mihintale are the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka, from 1070 to 1310. The Golden Temple of Dambulla is a cave-temple complex, pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, with beautiful mural paintings and statues. Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is an ancient fortress on top of a 200 meter high rock, capital of Sri Lanka for a short time in the 5th century, and Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Kandy was the last old capital of Sri Lanka. Temple of the Tooth Relic is a famous pilgrimage site in Kandy, keeping the sacred tooth of the Buddha. At the UAE’s First Camel Riding School, Women Are Taking the Reins

Linda Krockenberger opened her Arabian Desert Camel Riding Center last year—and an increasing number of women are signing up for lessons.

Linda Krockenberger is in her element. At a sandy camel farm on the outskirts of Dubai, where the city fades into desert, she’s chatting with farmers in Arabic, adjusting a rope here, patting a hump there. It’s an unusual place to find a young, softly spoken German woman, but as co-founder of the United Arab Emirates' first officially licensed camel riding school, she’s very much at home.

Camels have long played an important role in the region’s history. The dromedary, the single-humped camel found across the Arabian Peninsula, is thought to have been domesticated here up to 5,000 years ago, used as a means of transport and to carry goods on trade routes, and as a source of wool, milk, meat, and leather. Nowadays, they’re most often spotted in the distance from a desert highway, or encountered at resorts and desert camps where a quick camel ride is high on many travelers’ must-do lists

Thailand's Best FLOATING MARKET with Mark Wiens!

Have you ever heard of a floating market before? If not, you're in for a real treat (literally, wait until you see how much we ate)! In Thailand, some markets are 'floating' -- meaning they function entirely on narrow canals with small boats moving up and down . You pay a small price to hire a boat driver for an hour (or longer), and then choose which delicious meals to eat from dozens of vendors (on boats) with elderly women cooking up something unique. It's all cheap and delicious and this is debatably the best experience you can have in Thailand. This morning, my buddy Mark Wiens from Migrationology and I headed 2 hours outside of Bangkok to a floating market called Damnoen Saduak, where he introduced me to some of Thailand's best dishes. We had a blast shooting this video and I hope you enjoy what we have to share!

About the Douro River

One of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, the Douro flows from its source in north-central Spain through Portugal and runs about 560 miles to its outlet at Porto on the Atlantic Ocean. Its name comes from the ancient Celtic tribal word for water. The river is wild and meandering; only certain parts of it are navigable by small river vessels. The area is beautiful and unspoiled and features a very habitable microclimate where olives, almonds and especially wine grapes are grown. Scenery along the river is picturesque, dotted by terraced hills, small towns and traditional rabelo sailing boats with their casks of port wine.

The area in and around Pinhão is considered to be the center of port wine, with wine-producing quintas (farms) dotting the slopes that line the river.

The Douro is quite narrow in parts and water levels have historically been inconsistent, but there are now five dams on the Portuguese section of the river which have helped to stabilize water levels and also produce some electric power. The dams have allowed the scheduling of river cruise excursions along the Douro River Valley.

Day 2

After breakfast, embark on a half-day tour of Lisbon. Guests sailing with us on Viking Osfrid or Viking Torgil will begin at Belém with a tour of Jerónimos Monastery, one of the most prominent examples of Portuguese late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Tower of Belém, where you will stop for a photograph. Guests sailing on Viking Hemming and Viking Helgrim will enjoy a guided tour of the Maritime Museum, located in the monastery’s West Wing. This afternoon you may join an optional tour to explore more of Lisbon or get a taste of its cuisine. (Breakfast)

The Régua is the center of the demarcated region of the Douro. It is in the central part of the Douro Line between Porto and Pocinho. The fact that it is the junction point of two railway lines, and crossing several roads here, has made Régua an important communications center between the regions of Beira and Trás-os-Montes. It is also known as the international capital of wine and vineyards. When visiting Régua, we were surprised by the pedestrian promenade that runs through the city along the Douro River.

This morning, we sail east along the Douro. See dramatic, sheer rock formations, picturesque terraced vineyards and graceful bridges and trestles along the way; you also pass through two of the river’s locks at the Valeira and Pocinho Dams. We arrive at Barca d’Alva, not far from the Spanish border, in mid-afternoon.

This afternoon, enjoy a tour to Castelo Rodrigo. Located approximately 2,200 feet above sea level and surrounded by almond trees, Castelo Rodrigo is one of Portugal’s 12 historic parishes; its streets are narrow and steep, and its houses still present 16th-century facades. Here you see Sinagoga Street, a remembrance of the Jewish community established by refugees from the Spanish Inquisition; you can visit the local church as well. As we ride back to our ship, we will stop along the way to admire panoramic views. (B, L, D)

Today you have a full-day excursion to Salamanca, Spain. This ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living museum that takes visitors back to the Middle Ages; yet it is also a cosmopolitan and multicultural city with a large population of international students. Take a ride through the Iberian countryside to Salamanca, then spend some time exploring the shops and cafés of the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) on your own. At the local market, enjoy sampling regional cuisine. Your guided city tour takes you to the Gothic House of Shells, 13th-century Salamanca University and the New Cathedral, built from 1513 through 1733. Joanna Lumley embarks on a childhood dream to travel the length of the Nile river, from the Mediterranean to its source. In this first episode, she travels from (what is now a modern city) called Alexandria to Cairo. Whilst there, she visits Cairo's famous bazaar and takes a camel ride through the streets to visit the pyramids at Giza. From Cairo, she then takes the overnight train to Luxor in a first class coach with a very nice sleeper bed. Once there, she embarks on a Nile cruise ship to Aswan. The ship is also quite luxurious and gives her beautiful views of the river and life along its banks.

During the 18 hour journey she has to deal with crowding and less than sanitary conditions but agreeable travel companions. She gets to view the great statues at Abu Simbel as they pass by. They then travel by car to Wawa where they boat down a stretch of Nile in search of giant crocodiles that can grow up to 20 feet long. A further trip by car takes them to a holy mountain and then go deep underground to visit the tomb of a Queen who lived circa 650 B.C.

Joanna Lumley has now reached the half-way mark in her journey. At Khartoum, the White Nile is joined by the Blue Nile which flows from the southeast and Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Once a great trading center, Khartoum still has many remnants of the 19th century battles with the British. Lumley also undergoes a special skin treatment using scented acacia wood. On leaving Khartoum, she flies to Lake Tana where she eats some of the local delicacies and enjoys a local alcoholic beverage. A visit to St. George's monastery reveals extraordinary murals. From Lake Tana they drive to the Simien Mountains where young women train as long distance runners.

New Mexico's Unique Native American Communities

There are 23 Indian tribes located in New Mexico - nineteen Pueblos, three Apache tribes (the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, the Jicarilla Apache Nation and the Mescalero Apache Tribe), and the Navajo Nation.

The nineteen Pueblos are comprised of the Pueblos of Acoma, Cochiti, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambe, Ohkay Owingeh, Picuris, Pojoaque, Sandia, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Zuni and Zia.

New Mexico True: Native American Art

Native Americans have been making art in New Mexico for many hundreds of years. The most rudimentary forms of weaving in the area date back to around 700AD and the Pueblo people, who in the 1600s are believed to have taught the Navajo their skills. The different tribes have their different specialties, with the Zuni hand-crafting inlaid jewelry, the Dine weaving intricate rugs, and the Hopi Pueblo carving 'kachinas,' dolls that represent varying spiritual beings. Pueblo Indian pottery is another art form that has local roots; today's pottery-makers still use traditional age-old tools. TAOS PUEBLO

Taos Pueblo (or Pueblo de Taos) is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people. It lies about 1 mile north of the modern city of Taos, New Mexico. The pueblos are considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. This has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taos Pueblo is a member of the Eight Northern Pueblos, whose people speak two variants of the Tanoan language. The Taos community is known for being one of the most private, secretive, and conservative pueblos. Natives will almost never speak of their religious customs to outsiders, and because their language has never been written down, much of the culture remains unknown to the rest of the world. A reservation of 95,000 acres (38,000 ha) is attached to the pueblo, and about 4,500 people live in this area.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico: Exploring the Big Room & Natural Entrance

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is New Mexico's most popular national park and a personal favorite of mine. The caverns are massive and provide so much room for exploration. I spent a good 3 hours underground and still didn't see everything. Some of the highlights were watching the bats exit the cave as I entered, exploring the main corridor and then walking through the Big Room. The Big Room is so impressive that it is hard to comprehend. Be sure to visit the park if you get the chance.
